3 ways to access the “hidden” job market?

Did you know that 80% of job vacancies are never advertised? Many jobs are filled through word of mouth or by resumes on file from people who have contacted the company looking for work.

This is known as the”hidden job market” so today we are going to cover a few ways you can try to find these “hidden” jobs?

Networking

Networking is simply speaking to people you know to get information and develop more contacts. Talk to as many people as you can. The more people who know you’re looking for a job, the more people who are helping you in your job search.

Make a list of all the people to talk to, for example, other students, friends, friends of friends, local shops or businesses (eg. 7-11, the gym, bars and pubs), neighbours. Here are some questions you could ask them:

“Do you know anyone looking for staff?”

“Would you mind mentioning my name if you hear of any job vacancies?”

Cold calling

When you go out calling on employers you should be dressed as if you were going for a job interview. Have copies of your resume so that you can leave one with a prospective employer.

It is important that you try and see the person who actually does the hiring [ manager, human resources department ]. If you can’t speak to the right person, at least find out their name so that you can phone a couple of days later to confirm that they received the resume that you left.

Don’t take rejection personally. Remember that cold calling is a numbers game. The more contacts you make, the better your chances of finding work.

With many large companies like Coles, Myer, Target, McDonalds, you can apply online even if there are no advertised jobs. Check their websites and look for job opportunities, or job application forms.

Volunteering

Volunteering is a good way to get work experience and may even lead to a paid job.

Volunteering looks great on your resume, and will also provide you with a reference when you apply for a paid job. As well as places like charity shops, animal shelters, and nursing homes – big music festivals and other events also need volunteers …especially in summer!! Have any of these methods worked for you?   Do you have any tips to share with other students?
